Top 10 90's Music

It's true that the music today cannot surpass the greatness of the old ones, so I list down some of my all-time favorites.

As a 90's kid, I’m feeling a little bit old right now to even mention the songs that made me hooked for the past decade. I don’t know about the modern music but I appreciate most of it in the 90’s and early 2000’s. Now you’re probably guessing how old I am but I’m proud to be in my early 30’s. Haha!

I’ve known a lot of songs that remind me of my childhood in the 90’s and I honestly had a hard time tailoring them down to be on my top 10 list. I’ve disregarded some of my favorite songs for the sake of putting those that are really nostalgic for me. So let's hit rewind and just let nostalgia fill our senses as we take a peak in the past.

From 1990 - 1999

1990: It must have been love - Roxette

I was probably 3 or 4 years old when this song hit the radio waves and been played over and over. I didn’t have the slightest idea of who the artist was and even what the title was but as soon as I hear this song, it just gives me chills and it brings back my memories of our old house in the woods. Yes, in the woods!

1991: All the man that I need - Whitney Houston

When you say classic music, there’s only one artist I can think of that has been so popular in the whole world. This song I guess is the second one I heard from the late and legendary Whitney Houston since the first time I’ve known her. Who wouldn’t get the chills hearing that brilliant one of a kind voice? Too bad I was too young back then to appreciate her music.

1992: Black or White - Michael Jackson

His every music videos last for more than an average supposed streaming duration and always have this energetic out of this world dance moves that only a king of pop knows. Surely this song brings back my childhood and what's interesting is that in every Michael Jackson song there’s always something that would leave us thinking. The song called “Black or White” depicts equality among all races. Its meaning was literally portrayed on the video which is totally on point and inspiring.

1993 : Dream lover - Mariah Carey

Another living legend is on my list. This must be the lightest song I’ve ever heard from Mariah Carey and it's also one of my favorite Mariah Carey songs. Everything is perfect especially since the song started with her signature whistle octave and finished with her upper octave with light runs which made the song so enchanting!

1994: The sign- Ace of Base

Okay, I certainly can't get enough with this one. We all know the song was featured in the movie Pitch Perfect starring Anna Kendrick and people have made their own cover versions since then. I personally first heard the song on the radio back in the 90’s (I couldn’t remember the year until I researched about it). I remembered dancing to the beat and couldn’t care less about whoever performed it originally. The year 1994 had numerous dance music but this one kept playing on my mind because of its really catchy beat and very infectious melody.

1995: Take a Bow - Madonna

This song is in every videoke (shortened for video-karaoke) machine or booths here in the Philippines and nothing can stop those who are obsessed singing it. Madonna’s Take a bow is obviously a favorite even up to now, I still love the song. According to a source, They say the song is about Madonna’s failed relationship with a movie star whom she starred opposite in the movie Dick Tracy (1990) and had a 15-month relationship. Now that is interesting!

1996: I Love You Always Forever - Donna Lewis

Its probably be my theme song when I was in elementary school. The year 1996 has been memorable for me. It was the first time I came to appreciate music when I listened to this song. Donna Lewis has distinct and fascinating vocals and people can sometimes compare her voice to Cindy Lauper because they seemed to sound the same.

1997: Wannabe - Spice Girls

Who can forget about the Spice Girls and their breakthrough single Wannabe? It's another catchy and infectious song. The rap and the upper belts are great and the beat is such a killer! The band is also one of a kind that even though it was manufactured girl band, I still love the fact that each member was able to pull off their own personalities. I just love everything about this song. Its a total classic pop that you cannot find nowadays.

1998: If life is so short - The Moffatts

Before I’ve known the Back Street Boys and Nsync, the Moffatts brothers were my ultimate crush during the late 90’s. They were pretty much popular here in the Philippines although they didn’t receive the same recognition in the US. I wonder why but these talented guys were so underrated. Their song If Life is So Short was their first single and we (me with my sister) even bought their cassette tape that time. We were so gaga over these guys and hearing their song played on the radio was insane!

1999: No Scrubs - TLC

The song reminds me of my first year in high school! I still love hearing it until now. The term No Scrubs means “no to worthless men” which is another girl power song from TLC. These girls never fail to amaze me. Their music video was futuristic just like what we see in movies. What I really love about the song is the solo rap of Lisa “Left Eye.” If only she’s still around. She could’ve been the queen of rap. What a loss!

So there’s my top 10 list about all sorts of music that influenced me while I grew up. It's true that music is fun and we cannot deny the fact that it has been a part of our lives too. I cannot blame people for wishing that the music of today isn’t as good as in the past. I admit I only knew a few modern songs and I cannot seem to appreciate them as much as I do in the 90’s. But we do have different perspectives. I think appreciating of music depends on each one of us.

Jojo's back and all grown up!

This young singer who started singing at the age of 13 broke the record for being the youngest female artist to hit the number 1 spot on the charts in 2004. Yes! It was unbelievable but Joanna Levesque, aka Jojo already reached the top of the charts at such a young age.

Great collaboration of Khalid and Imagine Dragons at the AMA's

I was browsing through Youtube and I stumbled upon this mashup of the songs Young, dumb and broke by Khalid and Thunder by Imagine Dragons and I was amazed. I didn’t know they even did a live performance of the mashup. Well, this is something new!
